Wired Versus Wireless Intercom Systems

So, you’ve decided to take the plunge and install an intercom system for your business or home. Now it’s time to decide which system to get. While there are a few different types of intercom systems, the decision really comes down to whether it should be wireless or wired. Both have their own benefits and shortcomings. Since each business and home is unique, it’s up to you to weight the pros and cons of each system before you make a decision.

Security

Most people install an intercom system for the added sense of security it offers. You want to be able to talk to and see who’s coming and going from your home or place of business.

Because intercom systems have access to sensitive information and can sometimes even unlock doors remotely, you want to make sure that it’s secure. When it comes to security, wired systems are the best choice. Each hub is hardwired to the next, making it difficult for anyone to breach the system. Wireless intercom systems rely on networks to communicate, which can potentially be hacked.

Reliability

Because each intercom speaker is physically connected to the others, wired intercom systems tend to be more reliable than wireless intercoms as well. Since they don’t rely on networks, they only need a steady power supply to remain operational. Every time your internet goes down, your wireless intercoms will stop working. If you’re away from the office, you’re not going to have access to your intercoms at all until you can physically restart your router.

Some wireless intercoms use radio frequencies to communicate, much like a walkie talkie or two-way radio. These wireless systems might be immune to a down network, but they are also susceptible to radio interference.

Wireless systems are also limited by range. If a speaker is out of Wi-Fi network range, it’s not going to work. For smaller buildings, this might not be a problem. If you have a large business or home, or are looking for an intercom system for the front gate, you might be better off choosing a wired intercom system.

Mobile Accessibility

It might seem like wireless systems would be more mobile-friendly, since they rely on networks, but it really doesn’t make much difference. Both wired and wireless intercom systems can be operated remotely. All that matters is if your intercom’s master station can connect to the internet or if it uses a mobile app. Aiphone JO is a popular wired intercom system that offers the convenience of a mobile app.

Ease of Installation

When it comes to ease of installation, there’s no contest. Wireless systems are considerably easier to install, and most of the time, they don’t require professional installation. Most wireless systems can be out of the box and operational within a few minutes. Since they don’t need wires, all you have to do is give them power, connect them to your network and they’re ready for use.

Wired systems require professional installation. The easiest way to add a wired intercom system is to install it during the construction of the building. The wires connecting the system need to be run behind the walls just like electrical wires. Installing a wired system in an existing structure is even harder. If you’re not a fan of visible wires running along your walls, you’ll have to break open the walls, run the cables and patch everything back together.

Cost

Of course, when considering new equipment for your business or home, cost is always a major factor. When it comes to intercoms, wireless systems are going to be easier on your wallet. Not only do wired intercom systems come with additional hardware, like wires, you also have to consider the cost of installation. If you want to install a wired system in a preexisting structure, it’s going to be even more expensive. The distance between speakers will also greatly affect the cost of installing a wired system.

Choosing the Right System

Every business and home is unique. If you value security and reliability above all else, perhaps you should look into a wired intercom system. If you’re only planning on using your intercom system for minor applications and would rather easy installation and low cost, a wireless system might be for you. Both types of systems can be operated remotely via mobile app, offer video and audio feeds and perform the same tasks such as unlocking gates and doors. They can also be integrated with your existing security systems and be monitored by your security consultant.
