Integrating Access Control With CCTV: 5 Myths

Written by Kevin Cameron | Dec 23, 2021 4:30:00 AM

We’ve written a lot about adding access control to CCTV security systems. Basically because it’s something we feel strongly about and are experts at. As you should know if you’ve been reading our blogs, integrating access control into your CCTV security system allows you to determine who gets into your business, rooms, individual offices or computer terminals. Access can be given in a variety of ways including via swipe cards, intercom or even facial recognition and the benefits are pretty substantial. Access control can improve productivity as well as:

  • Streamline employee functions

  • Improve resource management

  • Enhance payroll management

We Get It, You’ve Heard Things

Over the years working with clients installing security systems with access control, we’ve answered a lot of questions and busted a lot of myths. So we thought we’d clear up some of the confusion here by presenting five myths most people believe when it comes to adding access control to their CCTV security solution.

1. Adding access control costs too much

We hear this often, ‘access control is just too expensive.’ And, while any business integrating access control into a system is going to spend money, the end result will most likely save you money. Afterall, what’s more costly than a breakin or internal theft? The cost of keys to doors and offices alone can add up. And once those keys are given out can you count on getting them back? Let’s face it, peace of mind is invaluable.

2. Those systems are difficult to install

It’s true that some access control systems can be difficult to install. But not all of them. In some cases, a wired system can be close to impossible to install based on the layout of your building. Fortunately, wireless solutions are available and can easily be installed without major disruptions in your day-to-day operations. Some systems are as easy and place and go. The thing to remember is there are choices.

3. They’re complicated to setup and use

We know how access control is portrayed in the movies. Ultra futuristic with a ton of wild looking parts and pieces. Fortunately, that’s not a really accurate portrayal of today’s systems. In actuality, they’re really pretty easy to understand and to operate. Your installer should go over everything with you to make sure you’re comfortable with it’s use.

4. They can’t be integrated with an existing system

We hear from customers all the time wanting access control but believing they need to purchase an entirely new CCTV system in order to do that. But that’s just not the case. There are many access control systems that can easily be seamlessly integrated into existing systems. You just need to find the right solution.

5. They are hard to customise

This is another big myth. Many business owners are under the impression that once you set up your access you can’t change it. Not true. In fact, one of the great things about access control systems is their customisation. These systems make it quick and easy to add or remove employees from buildings, rooms and those computer terminals.
